About Counselling and Psychotherapy
Counselling & psychotherapy provides you with a space to think about present concerns and challenges in your life and reflect on events from the past which may be influencing those concerns and challenges.
Counselling is often characterised by short term (6-12 sessions) interventions working on particular issues or concerns. Psychotherapy is generally a longer term process and tends to deal with the underlying causes of present difficulties. We can discuss what is most appropriate and practical for you at the initial assessment meeting. We would generally contract for 6 sessions initially and then review the situation. I am experienced in and happy to offer both short and long term work as required.

What Conditions Can it Help?
Clients may present with a variety of issues concerning them, whether it be work stress, relationship difficulties, past trauma. These presenting problems can often be manifested in clients experiencing low mood, depression, anxiety or other distressing mental states, including feeling suicidal. Sometimes the reasons for these distressing emotional states are not clear. Clients sometimes are experiencing a loss of direction or control in their lives and are unsure how to 'get back on track'.
Counselling or psychotherapy can help clients identify the source of their pain and difficulties and then develop ways to manage their lives more effectively, heal the pain from the past and begin to live a more fulfilled rewarding life.

What Benefits can you expect?
I would hope that you would experience an improvement in your mood, a reduction in anxiety and a greater sense of control and direction in your life. I would hope that you are able to develop a greater understanding of how you came to be where you are in your life and a clearer sense of the way forward by the time you finish seeing me. The time it takes to achieve these benefits will depend on the complexity of the problems presented and how long they have been an issue in your life.
